The Subaru Boxer... and award-winning pedigree!

For those of you who didn't know, Subaru's engine of choice for their cars has long been the flat-4 cylinder, "Boxer".  This engine has been used in the early 'L' model all the way through the new 2011 STi.  It's proven itself time and time again as being a very capable powerplant.  In fact, in 2008, the 2.5 liter, turbo model was named the "International Engine of the Year".  Boasting impressive torque / horsepower, coupled with excellent reliability it continues to prove itself a worthy contender.

"Subdriven magazine" has more on the story:

Cherry Hill, NJ, May 8, 2008 — Subaru’s 2.5-liter Boxer turbo engine has won the 2008 International Engine of the Year award in the 2.0-liter to 2.5-liter category.

“This is a testament to the unique design qualities of our Boxer engine,” said Tim Mahoney, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Subaru of America, Inc. “Subaru has been producing Boxer engines for over 40 years and we are delighted to once again be recognized by the International Engine of the Year Awards committee.”

Juror, Christophe Congrega of L’Automobile Magazine, stated that the Subaru engine is: “A 2.5-liter Boxer full of torque and power.” This statement is backed up by the fact that Subaru’s Boxer engine beat BMW’s 2.5-liter 6 cylinder engine twice in its category for the International Engine of the Year Award in the last three years.

The 65 judges on the International Engine of the Year Awards 2008 committee were impressed with the Subaru Boxer engine’s power in the 4 cylinder 305 hp Subaru Impreza WRX STI, but were equally impressed with the performance of the 2.5-liter turbo in the 224 hp Subaru Forester. The engine is also found in the 224 hp Subaru WRX and in naturally aspirated form in the 170 hp 2.5i Subaru Impreza and Subaru Forester. The jury noted that aside from being a performance powerhouse, the Subaru Boxer engine offers impressive fuel economy.

As judge Nikos Kounitis stated, “This powerful, fun-to-drive engine justifies Subaru’s persistence in Boxer engines.”

The Subaru Boxer engine is produced in several forms for world markets including 4 cylinder engines in 1.5-liter, 2.0-liter, 2.5-liter capacity and also 6 cylinder 3.0-liter and 3.6-liter versions. Additionally, the Company recently introduced the world’s first Boxer diesel engine for sale in Europe.

Can't wait for the 2011 STi to be available?

Check out some pictures from "CAR AND DRIVER"'s March issue; the new STi promises to not be foreshadowed by the even more powerful 2011 WRX; the STi is promising to have some new, exciting tricks up it's sleeve.
Car and Driver has more:

In the wake of the news that all 2011 Impreza WRXs would be getting wider tracks and STI-inspired wide-body styling, we figured the nails were already being driven into the STI’s coffin. We were so wrong, as Subaru shows it has no plans of killing the STI with this additional new sedan body style, which dropped at New York auto show. Only offered in hatchback form since its redesign in 2008, the STI still will be available in the more practical form, and it will be upgraded to match the specification of the new sedan.

Gymkhana 2... the remix

DC Shoes' Gymkhana videos have swept the globe in the past year, and there is a very good chance that you've seen a clip of driver, Ken Block, showcasing his skills at some to some degree.  DC's Gymkhana franchise is on it's second video currently, and as we wait eagerly for Gymkhana 3 to be release (we've been assure that it'll be shown to the public soon), we have to be content with all of the other media surrounding Gymkhana 2.

This is a DC sponsored psychedelic "remix" of the second video; not for the faint of heart. We hope you enjoy!

New Hybrid Concept from Subaru Encourages Modern SVX Replacement

For those fans out there of the classic Subaru SVX who have been yearning for a new model, wait no longer.  With the Big 3 jumping on the classic bandwagon, it only makes sense that Subaru would go 'back to the future' with the once-discontinued SVX.  This new hybrid luxury-performance sports car promises to bring the sporty spirit of the SVX back, while playing up the "green" element.

ScoobyBlog.com has more:

Fans of fast Subarus rejoice – a new luxury performance sports car is ‘winging’ in.

Japanese firm has plans for a new coupé, based on the gullwing-doored Hybrid Tourer concept (left) which debuts at the Tokyo Motor Show next week.

Sitting at the top of the company’s range, it’s a spiritual successor to the much-loved SVX (right) which arrived 1991 and rivalled cars such as the BMW M3.

Likely to use the same platform as the Hybrid Tourer, power will come from a 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer engine although an electric hybrid drivetrain, like the concept’s, is possible. A Subaru insider said the car would target brawny performance motors such as the Vauxhall VXR8, which hints at a price tag approaching £40,000.

The SVX replacement is in addition to the upcoming £20,000 coupĂ©, a sister car to the FT-86 which Subaru has jointly developed with Toyota. Set o be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, it will use the same body as the FT-86 – not a new design, as has been speculated – with some Subaru styling cues to differentiate it.
It will also feature the same Legacy-derived rear-wheel-drive chassis with power from a 200bhp 2.0-litre boxer engine, hooked up to a new six-speed manual gearbox.

Driving Safety: Subaru Highlights the Moment When “That Moment” Arrives

Cherry Hill, N.J., August 4, 2010 – Subaru of America, Inc.’s new television ad titled, “Baby Driver”, is tugging at the heartstrings of parents around the country. The spot speaks to the fears parents have for their first-time driver children and features a father handing over the car keys to his daughter as she sets off to drive alone for the first time. In a neat twist of life imitating art, the two girls in the ad are real-life sisters and the “dad” is the real-life father to both girls.

Baby Driver – the story:

The new television spot begins with a little girl aged six, sitting in the driver’s seat of a Subaru Legacy with her father speaking to her through the passenger side window. She smiles patiently as her father gives her the “safety talk.” As he hands her the keys, we realize that all along its been a 16-year-old waiting for her first ride alone who’s Dad still sees her as his “little girl.”
“Most parents dread that moment when their children first take the wheel alone. It’s momentous,” said Kevin Mayer, director of marketing communications, Subaru of America, Inc. “We talked about this with our agency, Carmichael Lynch and we loved the idea of building a story around that moment through the eyes of the father. The fact that “he bought his Subaru, because he knew this day was coming” further highlights the reasons that people buy Subarus – our top safety and reliability ratings. We also know that many of our owners “pass down” their Subarus to their children since they are so highly rated and we wanted to show that too.”
Andy Lyons, who plays the concerned father is actually experiencing this moment in his own life. “As father to both the girls, portraying those complex emotions on-screen was not a stretch for me. Having my first daughter, Lanna reach driving age and knowing that my second, Georgie, will be there all too soon, I understand the anxiety of handing over the keys for the first time.”
The spot also outlines the inherent safety of Subaru vehicles and in looking to authentically portray that “hand-over moment” the company felt fortunate in finding the Lyons family. “When we found this family we threw out the script,” added Mayer. “We simply asked the dad, what would you tell your daughter before she pulled away? The dad took it from there and he was perfect.”
The Subaru commercial comes at a time when Teen and Distracted driving issues are making headlines.

National Teen Driving statistics at rmiia.org show that:
  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds.
  • 16-year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age.
  • 16-year-olds are three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than the average of all drivers.
  • Drivers ages 15-20 accounted for 12-percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2008 and 14-percent of all drivers involved in police-reported crashes.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), teenage drivers have the highest crash risk per mile traveled, compared with drivers in other age groups. The problem is at its worst among 16 year-olds, whose driving experience is the limited and whose immaturity often results in risk-taking.
“Making the right vehicle choice for teens with both active and passive safety features can be critical in increasing their safety while on the road,” states Mayer. “That ‘Moment’ is a real worry to many parents and we hope that our spot gets people to think about what to look for when shopping for vehicles for teen drivers.”
As well as being durable, dependable and fun-to-drive, Subaru vehicles are consistently named Top Safety Picks by IIHS. The company’s focus on All-Wheel Drive technology is another strong safety feature that helps improve driver control.
“When it comes to safe vehicles, Subaru is at the top of the list and that’s why we use their vehicles,” said Meg Kramer, founder of StreetSafe Driving Academy. “We need training vehicles that have All-Wheel Drive technology, are safe, reliable and fuel efficient. Subaru fits every one of our criteria.”
The spot can be seen at www.youtube.com/Subaru and was produced for Subaru of America Inc. by its AOR, Carmichael Lynch located in Minneapolis, Minn.

Subaru Sponsors Philadelphia International Flower Show

Subaru of America – the premiere sponsor of the event – displayed the Subaru Japanese Tea House, which featured a towering waterfall, koi pond, and bonsai and cherry trees. Also on display were co-branded, pink-and-white 2010 Subaru Forester and Outback models. Both exhibits were the work of award-winning Ledden Palimeno, a local landscape architectural company.
